Emergency Department:

The Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital is responsible for the evaluation, resuscitation and stabilization of patients of all ages who suffer from both acute and non-acute illness or injury.  Services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The Emergency Department is staffed by Board Certified or Board Prepared Emergency Medicine Physicians, Registered Nurses and technicians.  They are specially trained to handle individual cases and larger groups of patients who require attention following accidents or natural disasters.

More than 30,000 individuals visited the Emergency Department last year, with approximately 40% of those visits resulting in admissions to St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, and 60% being treated and released.

The recently renovated 9,000 square foot, 29-bed facility allows patients to be evaluated in two different areas within the Emergency Department.  The Acute Care Division treats serious medical, surgical, gynecological or traumatic illnesses. It houses private rooms dedicated to the special needs of children, psychiatric and trauma patients.  For individuals with less acute needs, a non-acute or “Fast-Track” unit provides rapid treatment for patients with minor illness or injury, such as minor burns, fractures or cuts needing stitches.

The Emergency Department staff at St. Joseph’s Wayne responds to those with the most serious acute cases, treating all others in accordance with the severity of their illness or injury. Top priority is given to individuals in a life-threatening situation, such as cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, unstable vital signs or severe injury. Also taking precedence are urgent conditions that are not immediately life threatening, such as chest pain, a severe allergic reaction, or a stabilized serious injury.
