The John Victor Machuga Diabetes Education Center:

The John Victor Machuga Diabetes Education Center is dedicated to providing current and comprehensive information about managing and living with diabetes to people who live in Passaic County and the surrounding area.

The John Victor Machuga Diabetes Education Center at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association, the national organization that monitors the quality of education and support programs provided to people with diabetes. The Machuga Diabetes Education  Center was originally recognized by the ADA in 2002 and staff had to complete a rigorous application and evaluation to qualify for continued recognition. Receiving recognition confirms that the program meets national standards for quality and validates the knowledge and competence of staff who provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management to participants.

“Receiving recognition from the American Diabetes Association means that participation by patients in the diabetes self-management education program will be reimbursed by Medicare or other insurance companies,” commented Mary Schneider, RN, CDE, program coordinator.  “Medicare will not reimburse for participation in programs that do not have recognition status.”

The foundation of our educational program is distinguished by a collaborative approach to care for people with diabetes. Since diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in this country, we work closely with our patients’ physicians and other clinical staff to create a unique plan of care designed to meet the needs of each patient, both during and after hospitalization. Our multi-disciplinary professional staff offers bi-lingual seminars on advances in identification, diagnosis, assessment and treatment of diabetes to corporations, community groups, religious and civic organizations located throughout northern New Jersey.

This Center, supported by a generous gift from The John Victor Machuga Foundation,  offers comprehensive diabetes education, including outpatient,* inpatient and community education programs. Affiliated with American Healthways Services, a national diabetes treatment program, The John Victor Machuga Diabetes Education Center serves as a model for disease management and education programs for individuals with chronic illnesses.
