Mobile Intensive Care Unit/MICU:
The MICU is a non-transport emergency unit that carries two specially trained paramedics, who are capable of administering life-sustaining drugs, applying electrical defibrillation, establishing Intravenous Therapy and utilizing advanced airway skills at the scene of an emergency.
The MICU works in conjunction with the local Emergency Medical Services or EMS of the community to add to their basic life support services. The volunteer ambulance corps members are Emergency Medical Technicians or EMTs trained in basic life support. They perform skills such as first aid, application of emergency oxygen, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation with Semiautomatic Defibrillators (SAED).
In an effort to better meet the needs of the communities we serve, the MICU Departments at both St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center were combined enabling us to have four units on duty each day. Two of the units are in service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The remaining two are part-time units running 12 hours per day, seven days per week.
Last year, the MICU responded to 17,789 dispatched calls and completed an estimated 5,815 ALS Calls. More than 2,100 individuals were assessed by MICU paramedics and released to an ambulance.
MICU vehicles are staffed by paramedics who have undergone specialized classroom education and intensive hospital training. They are certified by the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services Office of Emergency Medical Services. MICU Paramedics also have certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Life Support and Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support.
