Pediatric Tour Program:

The idea of surgery can be extremely frightening for a child.  Therefore, the surgical team at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital works with each family one-on-one to make sure that the experience is positive for both the child and the family members.

The Pediatric Tour Program enables the child and family members to come in the day before the scheduled surgery for a tour of the Operating Room. It gives them the opportunity to meet the surgical staff, ask questions and familiarize themselves with the equipment that will be used during the surgery.

The goal of the program is to decrease the child’s anxiety, this way the child is less anxious on the day of the surgery, knows what to expect and what is expected of him/her.

Recycled Unused Opened Sterile Supplies (RUOSS) Program:

St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital has literally reached the four corners of the world by way of its RUOSS Program.

Initiated in 1997 by Debra Dunn RN, OR Nurse Manager, the RUOSS program recovers, decontaminates, sorts, counts and packages, discarded but useable operating supplies that would normally get thrown away.

The supplies are then donated twice a year to other non-profit organizations that specialize in providing support to countries around the world, such as the Armenian General Benevolent Union; Carelift; PeaceWorks, and Healing the Children, Midatlantic.

Countries such as, Armenia, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Poland, China, Nicaragua and South Africa have been the recipients of much-needed medical supplies including, ace bandages, gowns, gloves, bulb syringes and dressings among other donations.
