Sleep Care Center at St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital:

Do you wake up tired every morning? Feel sleepy and struggle to remain alert during the day? Does your bed partner complain about your loud snoring?

Sleep… We all need it and most of us complain that we never get enough of it.

According to a recent poll by the National Sleep Foundation, good nutrition, managing stress and getting enough sleep were the most important components of good health. Yet the same survey found that only 1/3 of adults get the recommended eight hours of sleep daily and more than 65 million Americans experienced a sleep problem in the last year. More than 100 sleep disorders impact the health and well-being of men and women of all ages.  Sleep problems can range from difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night and snoring to leg cramps, insomnia and a potentially dangerous condition, known as sleep apnea---the temporary cessation of breathing during sleep.

At St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, a comprehensive sleep evaluation is available for people who have a sleep disorder. Following an initial consultation with a physician who specializes in treating patients with sleep disorders, an individual may undergo a night time sleep study in the comfortable bedroom suites located at the St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital SleepCare Center. During a sleep study, the patient’s sleep patterns, leg movements, blood oxygen levels, heart rhythm, breathing and snoring are constantly monitored by the sleep technician.

According to Aman Vazir, M.D., Medical Director of the SleepCare Center at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, “A single night of testing can provide us with a comprehensive record of a patient’s sleep patterns. From this record, we can determine the necessary interventions to correct the medical problems that are causing the sleep disorder.”

A night time sleep study can help diagnose a variety of sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, primary snoring and limb movement disorder. The results of the study are reviewed by the SleepCare physician and recommendations are forwarded to the patient’s primary care physician.
