Senior Acute Care Unit:
The 36-bed Edward & Stella Van Houten Senior Acute
Care Unit provides comprehensive, appropriate and compassionate care to men
and women over age 70 whose illnesses or disabilities necessitate care in a
hospital setting. The only inpatient unit for older adults in Passaic
County, the goal of the Senior Acute Care Unit is to restore patients to
their previous level of health or functioning and enable them to return home
or to their customary living environment. The staff on the Unit is composed
of experienced geriatric professionals who are fully committed to involving
families and caregivers in the plan of care developed for their loved ones.
They work closely with the important people in each patient’s life to assure
that all aspects of the individual’s health and well-being are fully
addressed.
Philosophy of Care:
Care for patients on the Senior Acute Care Unit is
provided by a team of geriatric professionals who are knowledgeable and
sensitive to the special needs of older adults. The philosophy of care
integrates the use of sophisticated diagnostic and treatment technology with
a deep commitment to respecting the dignity of each patient.
Staff:
Physicians affiliated with St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital
direct the medical care provided on the Senior Acute Care Unit. The
full-time staff of the Unit includes a nurse manager, geriatric nurse
practitioner, staff nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing
assistants. Support services, available on the Unit, are provided by social
workers, a nutritionist, a hone care coordinator, a rehabilitation therapist
and a part-time recreation therapist. Additional diagnostic and therapeutic
modalities include Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy and Case Management.
Our Beautiful Facility:
Located on the fourth floor East Wing of St. Joseph’s
Wayne Hospital with breathtaking views of the Ramapo Mountain Range, the
fully renovated and newly decorated Senior Acute Care Unit includes 16
semi-private and four private patient rooms, a dining area for patients and
families, an atrium for family meetings and consultations with staff and a
fully equipped patient recreation and rehabilitation area.

Acute Care Unit:
The Stella and Edward Van Houten Senior Acute Care Unit
admits geriatric patients, 70 years or older, who require acute care. The
environment has been specifically designed to cater to the needs of older
adults. Our staff is committed to returning patients to their home
environment, with no adverse outcomes due to hospitalization.
The patients cared for on the Unit include people who
are dehydrated or admitted with sepsis, pneumonia, congestive heart failure
or stroke. Older people who are frail, with vision or hearing impairment,
have two or more medical problems, or other appropriate medical or surgical
diagnoses are also treated on the Unit.
