The Edward & Stella Van Houten Senior Acute Care Unit:

The 36-bed Edward & Stella Van Houten Senior Acute Care Unit provides comprehensive, appropriate and compassionate care to men and women over age 70 whose illnesses or disabilities necessitate care in a hospital setting. The only inpatient unit for older adults in Passaic County, the goal of the Senior Acute Care Unit is to restore patients to their previous level of health or functioning and enable them to return home or to their customary living environment. The staff on the Unit is composed of experienced geriatric professionals who are fully committed to involving families and caregivers in the plan of care developed for their loved ones. They work closely with the important people in each patient’s life to assure that all aspects of the individual’s health and well-being are fully addressed.

Philosophy of Care:

Care for patients on the Senior Acute Care Unit is provided by a team of geriatric professionals who are knowledgeable and sensitive to the special needs of older adults. The philosophy of care integrates the use of sophisticated diagnostic and treatment technology with a deep commitment to respecting the dignity of each patient.

Staff:

Physicians affiliated with St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital direct the medical care provided on the Senior Acute Care Unit. The full-time staff of the Unit includes a nurse manager, geriatric nurse practitioner, staff nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants. Support services, available on the Unit, are provided by social workers, a nutritionist, a hone care coordinator, a rehabilitation therapist and a part-time recreation therapist. Additional diagnostic and therapeutic modalities include Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy and Case Management.

Our Beautiful Facility:

Located on the fourth floor East Wing of St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital with breathtaking views of the Ramapo Mountain Range, the fully renovated and newly decorated Senior Acute Care Unit includes 16 semi-private and four private patient rooms, a dining area for patients and families, an atrium for family meetings and consultations with staff and a fully equipped patient recreation and rehabilitation area.

Patients served on the Senior Acute Care Unit:

The Stella and Edward Van Houten Senior Acute Care Unit admits geriatric patients, 70 years or older, who require acute care. The environment has been specifically designed to cater to the needs of older adults. Our staff is committed to returning patients to their home environment, with no adverse outcomes due to hospitalization.

The patients cared for on the Unit include people who are dehydrated or admitted with sepsis, pneumonia, congestive heart failure or stroke.
