SJW Offers New CAT Scan System

St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital has acquired a LightSpeed computed tomography (CT) system that provides highly detailed images of the human body. St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital is one of the first hospitals in northern New Jersey to offer patients access to this state-of-the-art innovative technology.

“We invested significant financial resources to offer our patients and community access to the latest and most advanced CAT scan technology,” commented Peter Karl, President of St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital. “The LightSpeed CT System provides exceptionally high-resolution images that will enable our doctors to more accurately diagnose a range of illnesses, injuries or abnormalities. Because of its extraordinary speed, patient exams can be completed quickly and efficiently, thereby reducing the anxiety and stress patients usually experience during these exams.”

Computed Tomography (CT) System, also known as “CAT Scan,” is a medical diagnostic tool that allows the visualization of internal structures within the human body.  The new CT System at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital will allow physicians to assess patients who have suffered a stroke, evaluate the kidneys, liver or chest as well as injuries to the abdomen, spine or other trauma injuries. Patients with cancer or heart disease, as well as children, can also be evaluated.

“The addition of the LightSpeed CT System compliments and extends the range of high quality diagnostic services that the St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital Radiology Department offers,” said Michael Steinberg, M.D., Chairman of Radiology. “LightSpeed is 25 times faster than our old technology and gives us the ability to provide scans as fast as 0.5 seconds. This non-invasive technology allows us to quickly and accurately view wafer-thin cross sections of an internal organ, without the need for surgery. I am very proud that St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital has emerged as a leader in the field of diagnostic radiologic technology,” Dr. Steinberg added.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging/MRI:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is an essential diagnostic tool. It is a safe and painless test that produces very clear cross-sectional or three-dimensional images of the body’s tissues, even through bone and other obstructions.

Results from an MRI may indicate blockages within the cerebral arteries, which supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain, detect acute strokes and define herniated discs and cartilage problems in the joints. They may also detect the presence of blood clots or an aneurysm.

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Unit at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital is accredited by the American College of Radiology.  It operates on Monday thru Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm.

Mammography:

Mammograms are offered in the Preakness Radiology Center, located in the Professional Office Building, immediately adjacent to the hospital. Patients can wait in a private, comfortably decorated waiting area.
